Computer Literacy Program

C. Paul Earle
(Project Lead)

One of HAT's near term undertakings is to provide computers for general use by the public, so we are asking our members, co-workers, associates, and friends to donate their used computers to HAT when they have decided that they are ready to upgrade their home or office systems.

Initially, we envision that these computers will serve as a training tool for students of all ages and adults alike, to familiarize themselves with the personal computer and its capabilities. Once an individul has developed certain skills, then he/she will be truly able to utilize the computer to be more efficient in the use of their time to do research or even create and publish his/her own material.

We would like to place the computers where more people have access to them, so we are thinking that the Trelawny Parish Library, the schools and/or the Service Clubs are the best organizations to receive the computers. These organizations may already have a computer or two, but the more they get then the more effective they can be, and hence our decision to pursue "used" but perfectly functional machines which cost much less (if not entirely free).

Not all computers need to have internet access. In fact, we envision that most of these computers will be used in an off-line mode (ie. not connected to the internet) to read information on CDs. The information on the CDs will vary from Math, English, History, Spanish, Science, Accounting, Law, Medicine, Engineering, Architecture, Carpentry, Plumbing, Gardening, Hobbies, and just about any topic in the world.

As it turns out, the Trelawny Parish Library already has internet access, but it currently does not have a "CD library", so we are now soliciting educational CDs as well for the Trelawny Parish Library (duplicate CDs can be given to the schools) . The Library would simply treat these CDs the same way it treats "Reference" books, and the general public would simply request the CD of his/her interest for browsing while at the library. If the library has duplicate or backup CDs, then it may be possible to check out these CDs for homework just like you check out books.

I have personally spoken with Mr. Kevin Samuda, senior Librarian at the Trelawny Parish Library, and he is in favor of such an idea. The computers and CD's are welcome (provided that they are legally purchased), but he advised us that the Jamaica Library Service has "specifications" for acceptance, which are outline below:

Specifications:
Brand names: Dell, HP, IBM
Processor (CPU): Pentium 4
Processor Speed: 1.8 GHz (Minimum)
RAM: 128 MB (Minimum, 256 MB preferred)
Hard Drive: 20GB (Minimum)
CDROM Drive: CD-RW/DVD
Floppy Disk Drive: 1.4 MB
Monitor: 17" (15" Flat panel monitor preferred)
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Other: Speakers, Optical Mouse

Peripherals:
Printer: HP Laser jet printer
Scanner: HP brandname

Of course, we will only donate computers to the library that meets the above requirements, while other computers will be donated elsewhere.

So, after consultation with Mr. Kevin Samuda, I've decided to kick-off this project, on behalf of the HAT organization, by donating a copy of the following CDs to the Trelawny Parish Library to hereby officially "Open" the CD library:

1. Encyclopedia Britannica - Two CD set
(with Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & World Atlas)
2. Oxford Dictionary of English
3. Oxford Thesaurus of English
4. Math (Grades 6-9) - Four CD set
(with basic math, fractions, decimals, geometry, statistics, pre-algebra, & algebra)

Please feel free to stop by the library and and give it a try if you happen to be down that way. Regardless, you can start making your contributions to the CD library as of now....it would be greatly appreciated down there.

So, if you have an old computer, but still in working order, and/or educational CDs to donate then please contact any one of our members on the "Contact Us" page. HAT professionals (including Sherwin Wilson and myself) will be available for consultation on the maintennance and service of these machines.

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,
