FOTA Book Drive Through May 30, Memorial Day Picnic
To Benefit Children of Trelawny, Jamaica WI.
The Friends of Trelawny Association(FOTA) is organizing a Book Drive to
benefit the children of Trelawny. FOTA aims to create a positive influence in
the development of the minds of Trelawny's youth. All donations of new and
used books from all areas are welcomed. We encourage you to contribute
exciting and updated books to foster the creative minds of the children.
Beginner books for early readers ages four to eight years are especially
needed.
According to Librarian Kevin Samuda of the Falmouth Branch Library, "the
children of Trelawny are not reading as much as they should. The children at
the Primary School level especially are having problems in the
classroom, stemming from the lack of reading resources at an earlier age". Mr
Samuda pointed out that the children need to start over at the beginners'
level, and for that reason, a variety of imaginative books are needed to
motivate and inspire the young children to read.
Basic School (Kindergarten) teacher, V. Lemonius, agrees with the statement
made by Mr.Samuda. She stated that the [Falmouth] Library does not have enough
books, and that the limited supply available is in poor condition and
outdated. As a result of that, both children and adults do not frequent the
Library. Ms. Lemonius pointed out that the adults also need to get interested
and involved in order to encourage the children. She resounded Mr. Samuda's
suggestion that a lot of new and exciting books are needed to attract and
interest readers of all ages, especially the children.
All donations will be collected on Sunday May 30th at the annual FOTA
organized Picnic at Nyack State County Park, Upstate New York. BookSmart, an
internet based book search network, will ship all the books recieved to Jamaica.
To see what else you can do to help, or for more information contact FOTA
at (718) 712-4473. All books are appreciated.
