A $6 million zinc fence removal project in the Georgian town of Falmouth was launched by the Member of Parliament for North Trelawny, Dr. Patrick Harris, recently.
The project involves the removal of all zinc fences in the town, to be replaced with concrete and picket fences. The three major roads, Lower Parade, Duke and Market Streets, are the initial streets targeted. The replacement fences will be funded by the Ministry of Water and Housing and will be at no cost to the owner/occupier of the premises.
At the end of the project, which has not yet been defined, the MP expects that zinc fences will be eliminated as part of government efforts to make the town a tourist attraction.
Falmouth has been placed on the most endangered heritage list, internationally, which will allow for special international help.
