Pond School Computerization
- May 2004

The Story in Pictures

Four computers and one laser printer boxed and ready to go.

Donald Grant (aka. Count), a long time bretherin and fellow Falmouthian, assisted with the lifting and driving to the Baltimore International Airport.

Boxes on the fork-lift as I look on.
Pick-up truck provided by David Chin, another long time bretherin and fellow Falmouthian.

In Baltimore, waiting for the paper work and hoping that the computers arrive safely in Jamaica.

Two weeks later, Mrs. James (Principal), in green, signs for the shipment in Montego Bay. She was accompanied by Kathi Cooke, Stevie Gregg and myself.

The cargo arrives safely at Pond School in Kathi's SUV.

Dr. Harris (MP) stops by to meet and greet and to express his appreciation for the gift.

"Fritz" (custodian) stands over the first box we opened....Yes, we could tell that they dropped the box during shipment, but that's another story.

Mrs. James smiles as we powered-up the computers just for a checkout....all was good.

A brief pause for a little chit chat.

Kathi shakes hand with the MP as he was about to leave.

The MP stops briefly in a classroom to greet the kids on his way out.

The MP flocked by the kids.

Still flocked by the kids.

The following morning the Pricipal announces the gift to the kids and teaching staff.

The Principal during her address.

I shook hands with the teachers as the Principal made the introductions.

Mrs. James tries out the new addition to her desktop as I explained a few things to her.

Two of the computers on a low table for the students.

The rest of the computer lab.

Jermane Stewart (a new volunteer and recent Knibb graduate) checks out the installation.

Then he checks out the software.

Now the kids get their first class in computing at Pond School.

Mrs. Virgo (teacher) turns around and smiles as she sees the enthusiasm in the children.

Mrs. Virgo stoops to take a peek at what Jermane was showing the children.

Jermane still flocked by the children after school....he's a natural.

Steve Gregg (another new volunteer and recent Community College graduate) stands just outside the school gate for a picture as he mourns his mother's recent passing (Maxine Lindo) in a tragic motor-vehicle accident just one week earlier.

Steve will keep the computers up and running and free from viruses, as well as implement any necessary upgrades in the future.

Like I said before, there can't be too many computers in the Parish. We are a long way from having computers in every school, not to mention every home, so please continue your efforts to provide computers where they are needed. Also, please do not interpret the efforts of others who are providing computers as a signal that your efforts are no longer useful or needed....that is definitely NOT the case !!!

Now that you know that Pond School has computers, please feel free to send them educational CDs or storybook CDs for their library.

Yes, in my mind I had a very productive trip. Everything came together as I had hoped, plus I got to see my mother for Mother's Day again (or close enough).

Thanks to all who played a part in making this happen. The Principal, the teaching staff, and the students of Pond School are very grateful and appreciative.

Sincerely,
