We are now living in an era where the common use of the computer is fast becoming a universal tool, widely used in educating children of all ages and adults alike. As a result, the idea of obtaining computers – whether new or used - for the people of Trelawny, especially the youth, is very important in today’s world. It is absolutely essential for them to become proficient in the use and capabilities of the personal computer if they are going to keep abreast with the rest of the world. Procuring computers for this purpose has been a vision of mine for quite some time now.
Over the past year, this initiative has been an ongoing discussion behind the scenes with HAT, especially as a way to support their Computer Literacy Program. The idea is to get more and more people, especially the younger ones in school, to familiarize themselves with the resources and potential of the personal computer. I was in a position to obtain a wide range of used computers which were to be distributed amongst various learning institutions and organizations throughout Trelawny. Unfortunately, the initiative hit a snag and was temporarily derailed by the corporate downsizing and reorganization at my company. So over the past couple of months I had to think of ways to rejuvenate this project, which ultimately brought us to a new stage of development. I am again working alongside HAT to achieve this goal.
Taking into consideration that HAT is still awaiting approval of its tax-exempt status, a fellow Trelawnyian and I came up with the idea of a Computer Drive. We decided to solicit money from individuals for this mission, with the knowledge that their contribution would have no tax benefits, but rather would go a long way in helping our children back home. The Drive so far has been successful in that we have had a number of people who have pledged a substantial amount of money. While we have not collected all moneys pledged, I have established and an account and deposited the donations received to date.
We have already purchased a few computers and as the funds keep coming in, we will buy even more. I will also be working alongside other HAT individuals in maintaining these computers, providing technical support and ensuring that all used computers we obtain have genuine certificates of authenticity which meet with the basic requirement set by law.
I invite you all, if you have not already done so, to make a pledge for the cause; your contribution can either be in cash or in-kind. We will accept your used computers, peripherals, accessories and software. Please feel free to contact me as follows to make your donation or contribution:
